You can learn how to do it yourself by learning to draw a cartoon ocean! The steps in this guide have been designed to make this an easy and fun challenge.
How to Draw A Cartoon Ocean
Step 1
We will remove this ocean scene in a frame during this cartoon ocean drawing guide. To illustrate this frame, we will use straight lines, preferably drawn with a ruler for the top.
The bottom two corners are rounded, showing the sand protruding from the frame. So let’s finish this step by drawing the first sea life. You can remove some corals and anemones before proceeding to step 2!
Step 2
Corals are always a colorful and genuinely stunning sight under the ocean, and we’re going to add a little more to this part of your cartoon ocean design. These are drawn with some thin curved shapes to make them sway in the water. As shown in the reference image, several branches extend from the coral to make it look like a small tree. That’s it for now, so let’s move on to the next step!
Step 3
As we continue this scene, we’ll add more coral and other marine life to the seabed.
Next, we’ll use a jagged line between these elements to show the sand between each object. It also extends to the rounded corners you drew in the first step.
Step 4
In this fourth step of our cartoon ocean drawing guide, you’ll add some smaller creatures and objects to the sea floor. These vary, including seashells, starfish, and smaller shapes; if you can think of other small details, be sure to go ahead and add any ideas!
Step 5
We’re going to keep it simple for this cartoon ocean drawing step! In this step, we will add bubbles to the water above the sea floor. These are marked as simple circular shapes.
The reference images show that they don’t have to be perfect circles. You can even draw more or fewer circles, depending on your preference!
Step 6
Now we will add more amazing creatures to this composition! First, we drew a fun squid structure on the left. So we added a big fish swimming along the right side of the image.
We’ll add more creatures and details in the guide’s next step, but feel free to add more animals to complete this step!
Step 7
This step of our guide on drawing a cartoon ocean will cover the conclusion with some final details! Specifically, we’re going to add a few more sea creatures to the mix. First, let’s draw a round jellyfish with some interesting points. So we added another fish to the scene.
Once you’ve added these, feel free to add some! There are many sea creatures and plants that we didn’t use. So if you have favorites, you can add them as extras before proceeding to the last step.
Step 8
Time to finish this beautiful picture with some colors! The ocean is full of great colors and textures, so there’s so much you could do to make it look amazing.
In our reference image, we’ve tried to include a massive range of highly vibrant colors that you can use to inspire your image.

Dive into these tips we have to make your cartoon ocean sketch even easier!
Tip #1
The seabed is teeming with life, and we captured it in great detail in this cartoon sea drawing. These details make the picture more spectacular but also more complex.
If you find all the details and objects in this design intimidating, you can change or remove some of those details to make it easier. The changes you make will depend on what you find to be the most challenging parts, but you can also make changes based on your preferences.
Tip #2
What are some of the details you think you would like to change?
When creating something like this cartoon ocean design. Arranging the different aspects can be surprisingly complicated. It can apply to fish, plants, and the environment. To keep it simple, we recommend sketching everything out with a pencil before drawing the details. You can use simple shapes for each animal and plant to show where they are going. Then, by drawing a few simple curved lines, you can map where the sea floor will go and see how it will form.
Tip #3
Once you have these shapes and guidelines, you can start adding the finer details! You can also make this cartoon ocean sketch a lot easier if you use the natural ocean floor as a reference. You probably can’t just dive to the bottom of the ocean, so using some photos would be the next best thing.
If you search online, you will find many seabed photos to use as a reference. They don’t have to match our composition, but if you find relatively similar ones, that would be perfect. Using these photos makes our design easier and can help add different details and creatures to the ocean scene.
